Class Description: Slut Ballet is a fusion of ballet and exotic dance techniques aimed at building strength, finding form, developing style, and gaining control: the goal is to help students learn how *their* bodies move so they can learn to express themselves with movement more fluently. All levels and all bodies welcome. The class will begin with floor and center “barre” exercises (we will not be using actual barres in this series)–movement will focus on warming and conditioning different muscle groups while teaching body placement. The class will then shift focus to choreography, first with some brief combinations across the floor and bits of improv, then a longer piece of choreo to finish the class. In the choreography section students will apply the technique they’ve learned, while also playing with style and artistry. Come dance with us.
Dress code: Comfortable clothing* that allows for a full range of movement. Ballet slippers, jazz shoes, bare feet, or socks are all fine footwear. You are welcome to try with pointe shoes if you have experience. You are welcome to bring heels to try (for use in choreo section only). Knee pads welcome and encouraged. *In the interest of fairness, and as a personal request, I ask that in my class, you wear a top (pasties do not qualify as a top), regardless of your sex or gender. Until all of us are legally allowed to go topless in a dance class, please show respect for your marginalized peers by not flaunting this privilege. Thank you. BIO: Vanessa White (aka Sugar Dish) makes a life out of dance and theater and performance. She started studying and performing ballet and tap at the age of three and has continued to broaden her dance practice and education through most of her life. She debuted her first choreography at age 10 at the local Boys’ Club lip sync contest and has since presented her work in theaters, pubs, basements, gay clubs, straight clubs, opera houses, classrooms, mansions, galleries, churches, and once at a military base in Honduras. She picked up burlesque in her late 20s, adopted the name Sugar Dish, and in 2006 she unwittingly debuted her first professional dance company, Babes in Boinkland. In 2008 they debuted The Slutcracker. In 2014 the Babes rebranded and became Lipstick Criminals. In her life as a performer she has danced in a range of productions including performances with Boston Ballet, José Mateo, Spindle City Ballet, Mark Dendy, Boston Pops, Amanda Palmer, Richard Cheese, Jo Weldon, Peter Mulvey, Hannibal Buress, and a TV pilot by Shonda Rhimes. She’s shown her work at Burlesque Hall of Fame, New York Burlesque Festival, Fierce Queer Burlesque Festival, Seattle Boylesque festival, AlternaTEASE, Ten Tiny Dances, TRACKS//Boston, and aMaSSiT. She performs and creates work regularly in the Boston burlesque scene (Fifty Shades of Bey, Rain Dogs…) and shows no signs of stopping. Follow her if you want to know more. IG: @sugardish
